How to Choose Aerial Work Platform: Scissor Lift vs Boom Lift vs Mast Lift

2026-10-04

Why the Right Aerial Work Platform Matters

Aerial work platforms (also called MEWPs) help workers reach height safely and efficiently. Choosing the wrong type wastes budget, slows down projects and can create safety risks. Here is a practical comparison of the four main types we supply at JIANUO.

1. Mobile Scissor Lifts

Best for: simple vertical access on flat surfaces - warehouse maintenance, factory work, decoration and installation.

Scissor lifts raise a large platform straight up, offering plenty of deck space for workers, tools and materials. JIANUO mobile scissor lifts cover working heights from 4 to 20 meters with capacities up to 2000 kg. They are cost-effective and easy to operate, but they cannot reach over obstacles.

2. Self-Propelled Scissor Lifts

Best for: jobs that need both lifting and fast travel across large sites.

Self-propelled scissor lifts drive themselves around the site, so operators save time repositioning. Ideal for warehouses, factories and construction sites where workers frequently move between work zones.

3. Articulating Boom Lifts (Knuckle Booms)

Best for: complex access over and around obstacles - facades, trees, signage, roof edges.

The multi-joint knuckle arm reaches over parapets and obstructions, with working heights from 12 to 26 meters and outreach up to 16 meters at JIANUO. Choose this when the work point is not directly above the machine base.

4. Telescopic Boom Lifts (Straight Booms)

Best for: long-reach vertical and horizontal work - high-rise facades, steel structures, infrastructure.

Straight booms provide the longest reach, up to 43 meters working height and 20 meters outreach in our range. They are the workhorse of large construction and industrial projects.

5. Vertical Mast Lifts

Best for: tight indoor spaces where a narrow footprint matters.

Compact mast lifts pass through standard doorways and work in narrow aisles, with working heights from 5 to 12 meters. Great for retail stores, warehouses and light facility maintenance.

Quick Selection Checklist

1. What working height do you need?
2. Do you need to reach over obstacles? If yes, consider a boom lift.
3. Is the ground flat and firm? Scissor lifts prefer flat surfaces; boom lifts handle rougher terrain with outriggers.
4. What is the job frequency? For daily multi-zone work, self-propelled models save time.
5. What certifications do you need for import? JIANUO supplies CE and ISO certified machines with full export documentation.
